Known as Panama Hats, this fine woven hat made out of the Toquilla straw, comes from Montecristi in the Northern Pacific Province of Manabi in Ecuador, its elaboration can take up weeks, depending on how tight the weave is, the tighter the finer.
The Montecristi hat, is very much appreciated by own and strangers, it was born in the 19th century, thereafter it began to make it to the European market.
The hat is made in 30 very meticulous processes and in total there are 45 days of this preparation.
It starts from the planting in the mountains in a place called Pilo, in Ecuador, this plant grows specifically in humid areas and takes 2 years to grow, is ready when its stem has a height of 2 meters.
Then the branches of the grass are cut and a brief treatment begins in which the leaf is cut and cooked in water for 5 minutes, then dried and placed in sulfur which serves to remove impurities from the hat, this treatment will be done when the temperature does not exceed 23 degrees Celsius.
At the end of the treatment, a craftsman manually begins to shape the cup of the hat, then in the final part adjusts the threads of the hat.
After the hat enters the oven and a carbon iron is wrap around the hat, the threads that remained in this process are removed, next step is to to be washed very carefully and then remove the last impurities that the hat has obtained in the manufacturing and in the end it will be dried, with this last process the hat will be ready for distribution.
